May 1st in the Garden…

Hurray, a fantastically beautiful day here and friends to help me unwrap protected shrubs, prune clematis, cut back ornamental grasses, and more!

While they unwrapped and tidied things up, I extended the border of my hellebore garden. Last night my husband and I planted two apple trees. It is all terribly exciting!

This morning we watched a weasel chasing two muskrats in our pond. He must be tracking down their nest! Meanwhile, a hawk up high was being chased by smaller birds. Then two Great Blue Herons flew past. Nature is so very busy!

Here are some of the beauties out there:

Lovely, Marie! It is an exciting season, and a busy one… for nature and for you.

These look pretty nice. I have been reading so many complaints about the late and cold arrival of spring. But, up there the flowers seem to be fighting their way through the soil.
